General Ampicillin is an antibiotic in the penicillin group of drugs. It fights bacteria in your body. Ampicillin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as ear infections, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection.Ampicillin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.. |
General Take this medication by mouth usually 4 times a day (every 6 hours), or as directed by your doctor. Take ampicillin on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal) with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of fluids while using this medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. |
General Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; diarrhea that is watery or bloody; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;urinating less than usual or not at all; agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior; or seizure (black-out or convulsions). |
General Ampicillin is closely related to penicillin, and people with penicillin allergy should inform their doctor before using ampicillin.
Medical professionals should be informed that you take ampicillin if any form of surgery (including dental) is required. |
General When administered concurrently, the following drugs may interact with ampicillin.
Allopurinol: Increased possibility of skin rash, particularly in hyperuricemic patients may occur.
Bacteriostatic Antibiotics: Chloramphenicol, erythromycins, sulfonamides, or tetracyclines may interfere with the bactericidal effect of penicillins. This has been demonstrated in view, however, the clinical significance of this interaction is not well documented.
Oral Contraceptives: May be less effective and increased breakthrough bleeding may occur.
Probenecid: May decrease renal tubular secretion of ampicillin resulting in increased blood levels and/or ampicillin toxicity. |

General Store Ampicillin Suspension at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), or in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). If you store Ampicillin Suspension at room temperature, throw away any unused medicine after 7 days. If you store Ampicillin Suspension in the refrigerator, throw away any unused medicine after 14 days. Store in a tightly closed container away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Ampicillin Suspension out of the reach of children and away from pets. |
